The arrangements for the Prince of Wales' visit and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations were co-ordinated by a Committee which was appointed at a public meeting in March 1897 and liaised with the Town Improvement Committee.
The Prince of Wales visited Cheltenham on 13 May 1897 to review the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars on the Drill Ground in Prestbury Park. The Royal Party arrived at the Midland Railway station and then processed through the town to the Pittville Pump Room and from there to the Drill Ground.
Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated on 20 June 1897 and it was proposed to adopt and sponsor the Victoria Home in Cheltenham as a permanent memorial of the occasion. The Committee also arranged for vouchers worth 2 shillings to be given to old people and a tea was organized for Sunday School children. A commemorative medal was also given to the children. A number of special events were organised for the general public and these included a procession of cyclists, a pageant and an "aquatic fête".
