Catholic Boys' Brigade (CBB) Brass Voided Cap Badge

Rare, C.B.B. Cap badge. Features the letters "CBB" at the top, a central papal tiara and crossed keys emblem, and a scroll at the base inscribed with the Latin motto "NE CEDE MALIS" (meaning "Yield not to misfortunes"). Designed as a voided rayed-star or sunburst pattern, typically featuring lug attachments on the reverse for headdress wear. VGC.


The Catholic Boys' Brigade was founded in Deptford in 1896 by Fr Felix Segesser. The object of the C.B.B. was to keep Catholic lads attached to their religion, and to promote habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Selfrespect, and all that tends towards a true Christian Manliness. The Brigade's uniform, military discipline, drills, gymnastics, signalling classes, and annual seven days of camping strongly attracted the lads. It was not in any way a military cadet corps, though incidentally its training was of great physical benefit. The CBB enjoyed a countrywide expansion between 1900-10 with one unit even started in Newfoundland.



In a 2-hour documentary - titled The Blue Puttees produced by Clifford Chadderton for The War Amps of Canada - Lieutenant J.J. Donnelly, a recruit from the Catholic Boys' Brigade, is referenced for his leadership during the attack on Caribou Hill in November of 1915.
