The official War office account of the problems encountered in finding sufficient men for the Army's acknowledges that throughout the war it 'made considerable use of manpower from outside the UK, and a great variety of races and nationalities were ultimately represented in the ranks'. The majority of such vols, both men and women, proud of their place of birth wished to wear some mark to commemorate it.
