In the Second World War, the 1st Battalion was divided to form the 1st and 2nd battalions. The 2nd Battalion was involved in home defence and training throughout the war, serving mainly with the 114th Infantry Brigade of the 38th (Welsh) Infantry Division.
The 1st Battalion formed part of 159th Brigade in the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division5 until 159th Brigade joined 11th Armoured Division in May 1942 and participated in the invasion of Normandy and Northwestern Europe. Some 223 men from the 1st Battalion were killed during operations in North-West Europe.
Post-War
In 1947, it was re-designated 1st Battalion, The Herefordshire Light Infantry. In 1967, as part of the re-organisation of the Territorial Army, it was disbanded as a regiment.
