The insignia represents the Allied forces in Europe, with the flaming sword symbolising liberation and the rainbow signifying hope. Originally approved in 1944 for the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), it was later redesignated for the U.S. Army Europe.
